    Unhappy Beginner problem with the css, position and columns

    Hi, I'm quite new to html and css. I'm making a webpage that is for school. It is going to consist of three columns, a menu, a header and a footer.

    The basic code in my index.html looks like this:

    "<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
    <!--
    -->
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title></title>
    <meta name="keywords" content="" />
    <meta name="description" content="" />
    <link href="default.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="header">
    </div>

    <div id="menu">
    <ul>
    <li class="active"><a href="" accesskey="1" title=""> </a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="2" title=""> </a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="3" title=""> </a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="4" title=""> </a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="5" title=""> </a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="6" title=""> </a></li>
    </ul>
    </div>

    <div id="content">
    <div id="colOne">
    </div>
    <div id="colTwo">
    </div>
    <div id="colThree">

    </div>

    <div id="footer">
    <ul>
    <li class="active"><a href="" accesskey="1" title=""></a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="2" title=""></a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="3" title=""></a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="4" title=""></a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="5" title=""></a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="6" title=""></a></li>
    <li><a href="" accesskey="6" title=""></a></li>
    </ul>
    </div>
    </body>"

    I added some elements in the three columns, like headings and some forms. To adjust the elements of the forms Iike the buttons I used the command position in the .css-file to get them in place.

    Like this for example:

    #id1 "{position: absolute; left: 815px; top:500px}"

    This looked good at first but when changing resolution on my monitor the position of all the id's that I assigned a position changed. The same thing happened when I resized my browser-window. I tried to make it look good without using position but still got the similar problems when changing resolution or resizing my browser window.

    Is there any way to get around this or is there some flaw in how I used divs for columns within a div for content. I basically just want to have a webpage with a header, menu, footer (with menu), three columns with some content like forms, text, headers and some pictures. If anyone has a tip on how to do this like I tried or some other method that would be great. I can also use a template if anyone knows a good one.

    Thanks!

    Excellent link, rangana. Same recommendation I was going to offer (though with no link).
