    Verisign loses .org

ICANN today decided to yank the management of the .org domain from verisgn today and hand it over to ISOC. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20021014/wr_nm/tech_domains_org_dc_2

Does anybody know anything about ISOC? If not I will do some research tomorrow.

Yes. ISOC is the Internet SOCiety.

They support/recommend standards for the internet and its protocols, and run training course in various internetty things. Kinda a technical version of w3c.

Personally, I am very happy for them to take .org from verisign.

Do you think ISOC will enforce the restriction that the .org extension should only be used for non-profit groups?

I doubt it , personally, but I will have to do some more reading to get a firmer opinion.

Well, if the ISOC is going to offer verison.org to Non Profit org's, won't they run into Copyright/Trademark issues?

They would be using a name of a well known company, wouldn't that end up being more of an issue for the potential buyer, than to just leave verizon keep the domain?
