How to let people upload their own videos to my website
Hey,
I was thinking of good website ideas and i thought of youtube.
Is there anyway that i can get some sort of script that allows people to upload their own videos to my website? I might be able to pay for it if someone can help and give rights to my website.
Please contact me on Close206@hotmail.com or on here via post
Thanks
Alex

Re: How to let people upload their own videos to my website
This is what you will want to look at:
1. What format(s) do you want to allow users to upload their videos in?
2. What format(s) do you want to show the videos in?
3. Do you want to allow users to download the videos or just view them on your site?
4. Are you on a server with shared hosting or a dedicated (or VPS) server? This will affect any uploads and video conversion you perform on the site.
5. What language are you wanting to have the site written in?

1. I do not really know i would like it to be the most common type
2.I will like them to be shown as a flash move which i believe is called a FLV type
3.I would like them to just see them however i want them to be able to upload their own videos to my site
4. I contacted my host ( i think thats what their called) and they said i am on shared hosting however i shouldnt have a problem with bandwidth
5. My site language is English

Re: How to let people upload their own videos to my website
1, 2, 3. There are probably several types you will want to have. The reason this is important to know is to be able to find software to actually perform the conversion to FLV (you are correct).
4. Bandwidth is not actually going to be your issue. The issue you will have will be the processing and memory used in the video conversion. The best thing for you to do is contact your host again, let them know what you are wanting to do, and find out if they will allow the conversion to be done on a shared server.
5. Ok. Do you know if your web server (not your browser) is a Linux server or a Windows Server?

Running a site like that is not a good fit for shared hosting, nor for most VPS servers.

Re: How to let people upload their own videos to my website
The largest shared package they have is 2gb space and 75gb transfer, for 5 pounds a month.
The servers are probably going to have quite a few others hosted on them in order to make a profit., this means very little cpu and ram.
I will tell you now this is not going to work out like you are hoping.

Re: How to let people upload their own videos to my website
I am not buying it either that there is nothing to worry about on CPU and memory usage. I took a look at GTXGaming, and could not find their TOS which is where the limits will be. To find out, you will either need to read through the TOS, or contact them.
You will also need to realize that even if GTXGaming does not post limits, they will require you to upgrade your server to a private server once you start actually doing video conversion. You could start with a shared server, but need to reaslize that you may end up upgrading your server pretty quickly.

Re: How to let people upload their own videos to my website
Lets assume that I am off base and that you will get sufficient cpu and mem.
Now lets assume you fill your 2 gb space with videos. A very safe bet since vid files are pretty big.
How many times a month can 2 gb of video be viewed if you have 75 gb of transfer?
So to answer your question, either ditch the idea, or be ready to fork out money for a dedicated.

Dedicated server prices can range between $75 to several hundred. Can you manage a server or do you need to pay for management ?
