    expanding/contracting like Wikipedia

Anyone have the source code for the expanding/contracting contracting snippets of subsidiary data that Wikipedia uses on their content pages?

    that is:

    + cities (unexpanded or closed)

    - cities (expanded when the + above is clicked)
    -Chicago
    -New York
    -Los Angeles
    -etc

Or, anyone have the code (if there is any) for importing text onto a page on demand instead of via the normal <Script language... process?

I have the JSbible - so pointing to a Chapter on the CD would be sufficient.

Thanks - will check it out when I return home from the public library - just began using some alert() scripts today and am hoping the snipptes will make it more elegant when displaying a footnote common to many pages discussing the same tidbit of history. one example now at http://www.cyriac-fhp.com/trunk.htm - the "note" button.

    Question Re: expanding/contracting like Wikipedia

The file is not a zip and is unusable - please display the source code in a posting so it can be shared with everyone.

    Hi there benzden,
The file is not a zip and is unusable
Au contraire the file is a zip and is usable and fully tested.

After reading your post though, I did download the file to make certain
that I was not mistaken in making this assertion.

I have been a member here for eight years, and have employed this
method on numerous occasions when it's use seemed most beneficial.

    Hi there Dave,

that is very strange, I am using version 11.2 and as I said in my previous post it still downloads OK for me.

I have re-zipped it and would ask you and benzden to try this new zip.

    Re: expanding/contracting like Wikipedia

    Hi there Dave and benzden,

    this is most unusual.

I frequent many forums and have had no problem with my zip attachments.

And, personally, my zip attachments download OK here.

To see if the problem is with ahfb itself, I have uploaded the zip file to my server.

So, would you be kind enough to test it from here...

Looks like I have some research to do. When using IE the first 2 attachments do not work, but your last one will. When using Moz they all are fine.

    Hi there Dave,

thank you for testing this problem.

Who would have thought that IE would be the cause of the problem.

Let's hope that our friend benzden returns with an alternative browser.

    Re: expanding/contracting like Wikipedia

Okay, this one worked and all files seem okay and my initial test worked to show exactly what I wanted.

    Thank you very much.

Now, I just need to simplify it and find out what the capabilities are regarding variables, positions, HTML coding within the variables, etc. - will be undoubtedly discovering more about CSS and JS than I've had to do up to now.

Will attempt to return with the simplest 'one file' example of what I've done when that happens in the next week or so.

    Re: expanding/contracting like Wikipedia

Okay, the initial, simple test is up at http://www.jamrent.com/c/debug.htm

first example shows an image; second a HTML encoded text narrative accessed via a script embedded within the HTML encoded HTM page; and the third a script via <script ... that is the same text as is used by the ALERT button at the bottom.

I'm as happy as a clam that it works via my new global .css and .js source files now located in the root folder that I also just figured out how to access (after 8 or so years of ignoring that efficient process) - will try to get around to the all-in-one html file to make available here.

Am still looking for a way to display varying scripts in the same "wrapper" sub-set rather than having to have a separate and space consuming wrappers one after the other - won't be unhappy if that takes another half-dozen years to figure out or discover.

Both all-in-one WRAPEM and SPANEM files show how to do it with either DIV or SPAN tags, respectively. Go to:

    http://www.jamrent.com/wrapem.htm

    http://www.jamrent.com/spanem.htm

to see them - have a zip of the wrapem but don't see how to upload it to make it available here. See also the revised, green and red color coded http://www.jamrent.com/i/plminus.gif file created from the other plus-minus.gif in order to satisfy my own preferences.

    Wink Re: expanding/contracting like Wikipedia

Go to http://www.Cyriac-FHP.com to see the index.html page with numerous examples of various hiding/showing techniques used in an actual web page. Most of the code is inside the file but does depend upon the initial <DIV ID="wrapper"> code which is contained in the .js include file, as is the ending </DIV> code.
