alert('Vous avez aimé le film?'); displays a little character box before the 'e'.
If I replace the 'e' that has an accent with the HTML code to produce "é" it displays the text of the HTML code without being translated to a lowercase 'e' with an accent.
I must be missing an escape character or something else is wrong with my syntax.
Anyone have any ideas?

I pasted your code exactly into a test page and it worked fine for me.

Ditto for me. When I pasted the following:
alert("Vous avez aimé le film?")
The display was fine. This with IE5 and IE6.
