    IE - Strange line spacing in last line of href

    Good day.

    I'm currently trying to get a lefthand navigation to space correctly in IE 6.0, and ironically it's behaving fine in Netscape 7. Basically, the line height is fine until the very last line. Then there is more height between the last 2 lines than for the rest.

    Here's an example of a link:
    Code:
    <a href="#" class="topicLinks">Definitions & Risk Factors for Domestic Abuse</a>
    And here's the corresponding CSS code
    Code:
    A:hover
    {
        COLOR: #ffbf15;
        TEXT-DECORATION: none
    }

    .topicLinks
    {
        FONT-WEIGHT: bold;
        FONT-SIZE: 11px;
        COLOR: #ffffff;
        LINE-HEIGHT: normal;
        FONT-FAMILY: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
        TEXT-DECORATION: none
    }
    Thanks for any ideas you might have for me.

    Hi there, welcome to the forums.

    I took your examples in isolation, and they seem fine on IE6, winXP.

    If you take the examples above and place them on their own on the page, does it work? If so, we will probably need more code to find the problem.

    Sounds like it could be as simple as a line break in the code. (hit the enter one time too much)

    Re: IE - Strange line spacing in last line of href

    Yea sorry about that, and thanks!

    I figured I should probably give you more.

    Here goes, HTML, spacer.gif is a 1x1 trans .gif:

    Code:
    <tr>
    					<td bgcolor="#58573C"><table width="173" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">
    						<tr>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="26" height="1" alt=""></td>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="129" height="1" alt=""></td>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="18" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td colspan="3"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="4" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td><img src="images/active_topic.gif" width="26" height="16" alt="Active Topic"></td>
    							<td align="left" valign="top"><a href="#" class="ActiveTopicLinks">Child Abuse & Neglect & Domestic Abuse</a>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="18" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td colspan="3"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="26" height="1" alt=""></td>
    							<td align="left"><a href="#" class="topicLinks">Definitions & Risk Factors for Child Abuse & Neglect</a>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="18" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td colspan="3"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="26" height="1" alt=""></td>
    							<td align="left"><a href="#" class="topicLinks">Definitions & Risk Factors for Domestic Abuse</a>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="18" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td colspan="3"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="26" height="1" alt=""></td>
    							<td align="left"><a href="#" class="topicLinks">Personal Financial Problems</a>
    							<td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="18" height="1" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						<tr>
    							<td colspan="3"><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="3" alt=""></td>
    						</tr>
    						</table></td>
    				</tr>
    Relevant CSS:

    Code:
    .activeTopicLinks
    {
        FONT-WEIGHT: bold;
        FONT-SIZE: 11px;
        COLOR: #ffbf15;
        LINE-HEIGHT: normal;
        FONT-FAMILY: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
        TEXT-DECORATION: none
    }
    A:hover
    {
        COLOR: #ffbf15;
        TEXT-DECORATION: none
    }
    .topicLinks
    {
        FONT-WEIGHT: bold;
        FONT-SIZE: 11px;
        COLOR: #ffffff;
        LINE-HEIGHT: normal;
        FONT-FAMILY: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
        TEXT-DECORATION: none
    }
    In my example: Definitions & Risk Factors for Domestic Abuse

    looks almost like
    Definitions & Risk
    Factors for Domestic

    Abuse

    instead of

    Definitions & Risk
    Factors for Domestic
    Abuse

    there seems to be a 1.5 line space between the second to last and last line.

    I'm sure there's something fundamentally wrong I'm doing here - but these links are going to be fed dynamically at some point, so I can't really specify cell height right now.

    Thanks again!

    yes, that code does exhibit the same behaviour as you describe.

    Now for the hard bit, solving it: Dave, you have more experience of tables than me, I cannot see the problem. Would you mind having a look?

    All of the table cells which contain links are missing there closing tag

    HTML Code:
     <td align="left" valign="top"><a href="#" class="ActiveTopicLinks">Child Abuse & Neglect & Domestic Abuse</a>
    shouild be
    HTML Code:
    <td align="left" valign="top"><a href="#" class="ActiveTopicLinks">Child Abuse & Neglect & Domestic Abuse</a></td>

    Re: IE - Strange line spacing in last line of href

    great googly moogly!

    That is so funny and sad at the same time, I don't know what to say. I spent about 3 hours trying different ways to render the font, and didn't see I hadn't closed the tags.

    Thanks so much for your help!!! Just goes to show that it's useful to have others look at something when you've banged your head against a wall and have little chance catching something so obvious at that point.

    I came across this thread looking for a answer to something else...
    and I realize that its a couple months old but...

    I would recommend a freeware program called TagCheck:
    it is no longed "supported" but hasn't been a issue for me
