I don't have the permission to give myself permissions?
I am trying to install MySQL on my computer wich is running on Windows XP on a localhost type of server. The only problem is that I can't do one single thing. I have tryed during hours-- No result. Each time I tryed to run whatever MySQL query I could in the MySQL prompt, all I could get is 'Access denied for user: '@localhost' (Using password: NO)' and that includes:
-Trying to USE a database.
-Trying to CREATE an USER.
-Trying to GRANT PRIVILEGEs.
When I type SELECT USER(); it says I am using ODBC@localhost.
I do not know how to manage my users nor to log in an existing even though I have searched for help about this several times. Please help, this is really frustrating.

In Unix, we start mysql like this: mysql -uusername -p
which forces us to login with a username. With WinXP, I am not sure how we would do that. So I googled a bit, and it doesn't seem so clear-cut.
One option would be to install phpMyAdmin which can administrate users in the 'priviliges' section. Try that first. If one of our members helps you, please click the icon to add to their reputation!

Oh damn, I had phpMyAdmin all that time and didn't know it could use it to change permissions. -.-
Oh well, thanks for the help, it works now.
