bought a domain name, now what?

    Hello,

I just bought a domain name for a website I am attempting to design. My website is hosted by my isp, how do I get my domain name to attatch to my site? If it helps my site is http://shanepritchard.home.bresnan.net and the domain name is shanepritchard.com.

    Thanks

Hi Shane, you will need to find out from your ISP if you can point a domain, if so they should give you nameservers. If not then you would have to use forwarding.

If it comes down to needing to do it through domain forwarding, you may be better off getting a real hosting package.

Thanks for the response. I think I comprehend what your saying.

What are the downsides to domain forewarding?

The main thing is that the address bar will always show the domain and not the path to whatever page they are on. This will have a major affect on the search engines as well.

Re: bought a domain name, now what?

I went ahead and got a real webhost. Now Im wondering how to make it so that the url shanepritchard.com opens up my home page. I have my files uploaded, but to get into the site I have to type in shanepritchard.com/home.htm.

    Thanks

Rename home.htm to index.htm and it should work then.

You can go into your domain interface and follow the way to set up your nameservers, your host should have gave these to you. If you have any problems or are unsure post the nameservers here and I will take care of it.

btw, where did you get your hosting?

Question Re: bought a domain name, now what?

Hey Im wondering if there is a way to set up my site without having to purchase yet another hosting package.
I have one now for a domain. but have two other domains that I just cant figure out how to get going!
I want to be able to have the address direct,
mydomain.com without having it with the addition of my current site... mydomain.com/mydomain
and while reading this please refer to my user name...

If your web host allows add-on domains (and you have enough disk space on the server for a second website), I believe you can host a second site under only one account.

Re: bought a domain name, now what?

well, when I type in my address:
    mydomain.com
I get a page saying welcome to my new site and to change the index.html page and I cant for the life of me find it!
Its not like Ive not done this before, Ive created a few sites, but this is out of my level.
My hosted account I have no problems finding any info via ftp. but this I can find at all...
the site I do have and am able to view is a double of the one I have, like:
    hosteddomain.com/mydomain
that comes up fiine...is there any way to just have an address and create a site?

index.html needs to be present in order for your website to display. That is called the home page, and is something that you build yourself.

Do you have any content for your site? Have you uploaded it (FTP'd) it to your server? We need a little more detail on what you've done so far in order to be able to help you.

Re: bought a domain name, now what?

I signed up for webhosting with one domain.
    oldfadedmemories.com
    then bought two:
    kateart-cards.com
    givingvermont.com
I have the one up, but all I get from the other two is that i need to change the index.html and yes, I know thats the home page..
but I cant for the life of me figure out where that page I do see IS in my ftp manager..
after emailing support they tell my that I need two more different hosting plans to be able to have those sites up -as written addresses- and not as
    oldfadedmemories / kateart-cards
(I had to add spaces so as it would be seen as a link, Im not allowed to post links, but you know how to make it come up!)
(no critique on that as Im far from finished)
my appologies, I do also know that you need the info to answer the questions, Im not good at explainations...pout...lol
let me know if you need more info.

Do you see a "www" folder or a "public_html" folder? If not you will need to contact your host and ask where to upload.
