Ethics on linking to other sites

Are there any problems legally or ethicly linking to other commercial websites? Should you ask each one for permission, and if you dont hear back can you go ahead and link? It just occored to me I have no idea if Im ok with the links Im putting up. They all pertain in some way to my site, and I think in each case all they could do is bring the other site business.

Put up your links and if anybody(fools) wants it removed do as they ask.

I have never been asked to remove a link, reviews yes, links no.

actually, linking to another site helps them on search engine placment(google), or i should say it cannot hurt the site. but if google has marked that site as a bad site, than you may be docked in PR ratings, but for somthing like what your site is about, i wouldnt worry about it!

Just remember to leave some sort of contact form or something on your site so that they can get a hold of you if they object to your linking in. Though I can't imagine why anyone would not want you to link in to their site.
In fact, I have a roster of sites that you can link in to if you like.
Links in help a website grow in popularity and perform better on search engines, so I can't forsee how a site would get hurt by your linking in. Unless you have some kind of disreputable site and they don't want to be associated in any way with your site. ( eg. if your site is known for password stealing or something then they won't want you to link in ).

    lol. yeah no doubt.

In fact you can link to my site if you want. Just kidding.

It helps them so doubt you would run into trouble. Unless you page is slandering them or something like that.

I have never had problems with anybody linking his/her site, but onetime one webmaster was angry when I added screenshot of his website to the link. I said I was sorry and I would remove both - the link and the screenshot as well. Btw: Do you have any problems when anybody publishes a screenshot of your website (and links to you)?

the best ethic for me is asking permission and make reciprocal exchange.perhaps it will be difficult if your site it low quality but it worth to try

I don't see any problem if you make a link to your site or vice versa. As long as you have presented it in a nice way, no big deal. The only problem you should settle is when the webmaster ask you to remove his/her link to your site.
