Question Why hasn't PNG taken off in Websites

It is a superior File type
    ...
It combines the beauty of JPG with the Transparency option of GIF - there is even a low bandwith option...

the only major thing it can't do is animations...

But Why is virtually NO one using it ?

because the file size it generally too big.

i made a small icon for my site, and i was debating on wether to do it in PNG or GIF, when i compared the file sizes, the gif was about 10k smaller, so i went with GIF

Internet Explorer (all versions) does not support the PNG Alpha Channel, therefore the transparency doesn't work.

IE7, apparently, will support it. I imagine PNG will get more use then.

I'll have to agree with the first response. PNG files look nice but they are generally much larger for the same quality. So even if they look right in your browser (assuming Dean is correct) your page will load slower than using a different format.

There are some browsers that do not see the PNG files corectly, such as neoplant (and yes this one is still in use by some users), and a few others, so I would generaly just stick with the usual JPG and GIF images.
