    'Login' Script

I would like a very simple 'login and display' script for my website so I can display the names of users who are on-line and visiting my website..
Can you help with the whereabouts of such a script..

    Re: 'Login' Script

    try this link:
    http://www.free2code.net/plugins/articles/read.php?id=99

to display who is online is very simple, just a something that sayes "when sucessfull login, write user to file/database" and when people go to your site, have it say "look at file/database, delete users older than 15 mins, then display them"

if you need help with that part, just post in the php section

    Re: 'Login' Script

Thanx for that link .. but having taken a look at it I think it has to be 'no thanx' that was just a complete page of gobbledegook to me - think I'll stick to wondering who's on my website...

Keep a couple of things in mind. First all pages will have to be named .php instead of .html. You will want to make sure your host allows mod-rewrite through .htaccess, this will allow you to redirect folks coming for the html page to the new php version and tell the spiders that it has moved.

Try to avoid user sessions if possible in the php, cookies would probably be best for your purpose.

    Re: 'Login' Script

Hi Dave - I think you just spoilt my day.. I was happy in my ignorance now I have to think about spiders, user sessions, cookies, and gawd knows what else... I think you misread my initial request - I said "VERY SIMPLE"

I hope I can find out where and what these things are...

I retired ten years ago and this was supposed to be a hobby now I think I should employ someone...

Can you change my status to Old Member and getting older by the minute...

    Re: 'Login' Script

actually you just got me to thinking... do you ONLY want to see who is online? or are your members actually able to do stuff?

if it is just to see who is online, i think it would be more of a downfall to the page rather than a upgrade. why would somone want to login if they can do the same thing as if they are a guest?

unless you are going to give some "if logged in" feature, i wouldnt bother.

but what you can do is: display the ip's of who is online (for whatever that is worth!)

    Re: 'Login' Script

I have this private website which I maintain for all our retired colleagues, there are just over 100 of us left spread around the world and it would be nice if we could all see who is online (or still alive) The website is well used and this would be another means of contact albeit only visual..
They would not be able to do stuff..

The ip address wouldn't do it I would need the users name..

It's not so much a "Login" with passwords and that it's more of a "Sign in" to say I'm still here guys..
