    Do you mean an alternate text which appears if you hover your mouse over top of the image for a few seconds? Just put the tag alt="Text Here" inside the img tag, like this:

    <img src="image.gif" alt="Text Here">

    Or do you mean the javascript menu?

    I mean the javascript menu, the kind that lts you navigate around a site without a 'go' button.

    To place an object on top of an image with HTML you would make the image part of the table background and insert the top object in the cell.
    example:
    <td background="blah.jpg" width="272" height="38" border="0">javascript pulldown menu</td>

    The height="??" thing doesn't work on Netscape, or at least older versions of Netscape, i tried using it for my site.

    Just make a transparent picture.
    Make it 1 pixel thick and make it as tall as the background image, then put it in the table, then put the drop down next to it.

    Height is not a valid attribute, but some ie browsers catch it.
    You do have a fantastic solution.
