    Smile Large tables slow?

    Hi

I've heard (or made up) that large tables slow down loading web pages. Is this true?
Would it help if I merge redundant cells to simplify the tables?
Or will this cause problems by complicating the code/ confusing browsers?

    Thank you for any tips

    Mat

Large anything slows down loading webpages.
Combining cells will not make any difference, the webpage is ultimately a file, and the size of the file governs how long it takes to display.
In the same way that a 100Mb file takes alot longer to download than a 1Mb file, a 100Mb webpage takes alot longer to download than a 1Mb webpage.
Some browsers render the page as it arrives, others sit there all clean and blank until the whole thing is loaded, then spring into life.

Graphics are really what slows a website down. HTML coding, when done properly doesn't take up that much file space. Javascript can also slow you way down. I wouldn't worry that much about an html table, though.

If you have messy or redundant coding, it is best to clean it up. Think less is more. It will make it easier to maintain in the long run, and to update when web standards change.
