    Angry Browser compatiblity

    I have to resort to having a few versions of some of my pages because Netscape 4.0 doesn't support quite a few (basic!)tags.
    Firstly - how many browsers would you bother with trying to please.....and secondly......how do you point one webpage at a particular browser (Netsc.) and one at another browser (eg IE)within the one site?
    Any help would be hugely appreciated...or any special tips on coping with browser incompatibility.
    Cheers!!!!

    Hiya cellojane,

    Browser compatibilty is one of my biggest bugbears, or at least it used to be.

    I read this article - http://www.alistapart.com/stories/tohell/

    It's basicallly about writing code that sticks to the defined standards. The joy of this is that your page will look great in any browser that supports the standards, and degenerates gracefully in any browser that doesn't. It really changed the way I code and I recommend it as vital reading.

    Heres is simple script that detects between Netscape and Iexplore -

    Code:
    <script language="JavaScript">
    <!--
    browserName=navigator.appName;

      if ((browserName=="Netscape") ||  (browserName=="Microsoft Internet Explorer"))
      {
        if (browserName=="Netscape")
            version="NS";
         else
             version="IE";
         }
      else
          version="OTHER";

    if ((version=="NS") || (version=="IE"))
    {
     if (version=="NS")
     /* NS URL */
       window.location="http://www.evertale.com/dean/netscape.php";
     }
    //-->
    </script>
    Have fun.
