    Link text disappered-HELP!!

    uhaweb.hartford.edu/edmain/uhmhs.html

    the side bar should have links on it, but i can not figure out why they dissapered
    I am trying to repare some of the website (and update it) but i can not figure out why the text disappaered.

    since i do NOT know why the text disapered, i do not know what section of the code to post, so i posted a link to the website so that you may see the problem

    After searching for an answer, i found this forum, and i though it might help.

    Also, how can i send a form without Outlook using ONLY html?

    Re: Link text disappered-HELP!!

    Compare this section of code:

    Code:
    	  <td width=12 style='width:9.0pt;background:black;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;
          height:14.25pt'>
          <p class=MsoNormal align=right style='text-align:right'><img border=0
          width=6 height=19 id="_x0000_i1063" src="main_graphics/button_left.gif"></p>
          </td>
          <td width=71 style='width:53.25pt;background:#CC0000;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;
          height:14.25pt'>
          <p class=MsoNormal align=center style='text-align:center'><a
          href="mtwain.html"><strong><span style='font-size:7.5pt;color:white'>Mark
          Twain </span></strong></a></p>
          </td>
          <td width=12 style='width:9.0pt;background:black;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;
          height:14.25pt'>
          <p class=MsoNormal><img border=0 width=6 height=19 id="_x0000_i1064"
          src="main_graphics/button_right.gif"></p>
          </td>
    with this one:

    Code:
          <td width=12 style='width:9.0pt;background:black;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;
          height:14.25pt'>
          <p class=MsoNormal align=right style='text-align:right'><img border=0
          width=6 height=19 id="_x0000_i1065" src="main_graphics/button_left.gif"></p>
          </td>
          <td width=70 style='width:52.5pt;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;height:14.25pt'>
          <p class=MsoNormal align=center style='text-align:center'><a
          href="tsweaver.html"><strong><span style='font-size:7.5pt;color:white'>Thomas
          S. Weaver</span></strong></a></p>
          </td>
          <td width=12 style='width:9.0pt;background:black;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;
          height:14.25pt'>
          <p class=MsoNormal><img border=0 width=6 height=19 id="_x0000_i1066"
          src="main_graphics/button_right.gif"></p>
          </td>
    Both should be identical except for the hyperlink in them. For example, this line in the first code block:

    Code:
    <td width=71 style='width:53.25pt;background:#CC0000;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;
    and the second code block (missing code highlighted in red):

    Code:
    <td width=70 style='width:52.5pt;background:#CC0000;padding:0in 0in 0in 0in;height:14.25pt'>
    There may be other differences, I'm not sure. Just go over them to see.

    BTW, you need your doctype to be the first line in your page. It would also be helpful for you to validate your code.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks- i only have notepad for editing and could not ascertain what was missing!!

    Also- what is a doctype???

    And, while that DID solve one problem, i was talking about the links on the side (Under the UHA symbol) When you go over to them, they highlight, but otherwise DO NOT show

    Also- AS long as the page displays correctly,
    I don't care- my only job is to update the pages and make them display correctly
    But, i may add a doctype IF i knew what it is (or even what type it is)

    I'm replying to both of your posts here.

    Notepad is fine for editing. I copied the code in question into an editor I use (1st Page 2000) to determine the code that was missing, but could just as easily done it in Notepad. I compared the two sections of code visually.

    BTW, 1st Page 2000 is a free tool and would help you so much with what you're doing here. As an example, I could give you the line number of a problematic line, and you would be able to easily find what I was talking about.

    And, while that DID solve one problem, i was talking about the links on the side (Under the UHA symbol) When you go over to them, they highlight, but otherwise DO NOT show
    Sorry, I looked at the wrong code. There's just so much wrong with this, there's a lot to fix. To answer your question about the section in question, it looks like your have the link text specifying the same color as the background of that section of the page. Your link color is specified in your CSS as #cc0000, and the table that contains this section of links also specifies a background color of #cc0000. That's why the links aren't showing up. If you hover your mouse over them though, they show up because the hover color is different.

    If you want to fix this AND make it easier to maintain, you really need to clean up this markup. It's just awful! In particular, fix the indentation and all those nested tables. Aarrgghh!

    Also- AS long as the page displays correctly,
    I don't care- my only job is to update the pages and make them display correctly

    You need to care about the doctype. It can potentitally fix a lot of errors in your markup with a minimum of effort. For more about what it is and what it does, I suggest you read this. It also suggests that you validate your markup, as I suggested in my previous post. Your doctype statement is the second statement in that page, but it needs to be the first statement in the page.

    Okay
    if it will help determine what is wrong (Doctype)....
    i will try to move it

    (1st page 2000)
    IT is on a university computer AND i cannot install ANY programs to help me determine what was wrong, and notepad was not helping me- ALL THE TEXT LOOKED ALIKE (i had difficulty determining what to do or where it is)

    I can not even figure out what the original guy DID

    AND i cannot make any revisions until Monday....

    Just to be clear on this, it may help fix some things that are wrong with your page. With as many things as are wrong with it though, it is unlikely to fix them all. Validating the page, as I mentioned, will likely cure a number of problems, but even that won't cure them all.

    I understand. It's too bad that you're having to work on a website without decent tools. Perhaps there is someone connected with the university you could speak to and make your case for having 1st Page 2000 (or some other web page editor) installed on the computer. Just a thought.

    Are you trying to build a form that will send an email to you? That generally requires a scripting language such as PHP. http://www.ibdhost.com/contact/ is one example.

    hey, umm, on the original problem, the text describing the school should be bigger, and it will not let me....(make it bigger)

    Also, i cannot find the place where the links color is described

    Also, your fix apparently had no effect (for the backround:#cc0000; add)

    Yes. A scripting language such as PHP. The link I gave in that post gives an example.

    The fix was for one problem, apparently not the original one you were trying to solve.

    BTW, your site seems to be down at the moment. Nonetheless, one of the things you really need to do is clean up the way that code is written before you try to fix the rendering problems. As I recall, I found that the color definition cascaded down from a parent element. It will be easier to find such relationships if you have proper indentation between the elements.

    FrontPage 2000 will help you a lot! You should be able to spot your page problems much easier with it. You might need to look at the code view for some things. Don't just rely on FrontPage's design view to solve all your problems.
