    Fabulous 404 pages

    Guys,

At the moment, I am putting together a collection of various 404 pages. ( http://error404.quietdean.com ).

    Sounds strange? well..

Basically, I want to show some accessibilty and design issues with various 404 pages. lets face it, the default one is useless and the most of the ones that are customized basically say 'oops' and thats it.

my 404 on quietdean.com, for instance, has a 'report' button that sends me an email including the requested url & referring url. This kind of stuff is useful.

So what I am asking (*get to the point* screams the crowd) has anyone seen any great 404 pages (great as in fast loading, well designed, useful) around on there travels? if so, please post it here for inclusion in my collection.

BTW - anyone else noticed the new skin on the forum? I like it. GJ Dave.

Due to the many directory changes I have made, I would lose atleast half our visitors if I did not make a custom 404 in which they could find the page they were looking for. All I did was make my 404 and 500 error page a dup of my sitemap. I think this has done a great job of hanging on to the visitors.

edit: uh oh, better fix my 500 error page

Thanks, Cant wait to see what all you dig up. I would love for some of my old links to get changed to this domian, and it would be even nicer if the search engines would drop my old directory structure. I have my logs open now
    /404page.php 8166 hits 0 incomplete 99.52 megabytes
this is in only 83 hours, obviously traffic has been insane this week but you get the picture.

good news only 3- 500 errors

Your thread made me look at those files for the first time in months and clean-up some errors and sloppy coding. Being in the root directory, the sloppy coding worked (../ references) but it's nice to have them make sense to anyone viewing them.
