Something of a newbie here...
On font size, is 3pt too big? I only work on one site right now and want to improve my skills. When I look at the site, I think, "The text is kinda big." But I also know that a lot of the visitors to the site are 50+, so I am thinking it would be easier for them to read with a larger font size. My site is basically all information, so it is all mostly text. Am I doing the right thing or if someone happens upon my site as a result of a search engine, will they think it is amaturish and move along?

The most important things about a website are useability & accessability.
Your target audience has by definition bad eyesight on average. Your font is not too big in any case. The important thing is because you have not gone for the 'all images' approach then the client can choose the text size themselves in the browser.
Your site does not look amateurish and your worry/care about your audience is a credit to yourself as a designer and a human being. If one of our members helps you, please click the icon to add to their reputation!

Your site was easy for me to read and I have very poor eye sight.
