    backgrounds

I am probably making this harder than it is. I need to take a graphic that we want as the background of a web site and make it lighter (not sure what the technical term is) so that the text on the page will show with the image in the background. What program (that isn't really expensive) can I use, and what is this called.

I think you refer to the transparency of the image, i.e. you want to make it more transparent. It's also called alpha of the image.
You need an image editor for that, I use Photoshop (it's a paid software) but there is a free trial version. There are many free editors, and web based free image editors, but I can't recommend you one, as I haven't tried them.
    Hope this helps.

One free option to you is GIMP. It is similar to Photoshop.

Another option you have is to play with CSS to get the desired effect. You should be able to set the opacity of the opject and acheive the same result. An example is here.

Thank you. When I tried using the CSS code, it always comes up in Expression Web that it is invalid. Plus it didn't seem to work.

What I ended up doing was working with the brightness of the image. That seems to work.
