    Pop up menu AP Div buttons behavior

    PLEASE HELP.......ANYONE?

    I am obviously new at this and need some help, here's what I want to do, I have a row of dreamweavers standard buttons serving as a menu, I want a simple pop up menu for one of the buttons. I am trying to insert a row of standard buttons in a ap div but are now struggeling to figure out how to let it pop up when rolled over one of the button in the top menu? I tried attaching a show hide behavior, but alas it's not working for me?

    Any ideas are welcome

    Thanx

    You might find this basic example useful:
    Code:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    window.onload=function(){
    document.getElementById('trig').onmouseover=function(){
    window.open('http://www.google.com','mywin','width=500,height=300'); // Google for window.open() method
    }}
    </script>
    <a href="#" id="trig">Link</a>

    The first question I would ask though is whether you want to use JavaScript or only CSS. You can have it either way, and it will work the way you want it to. rangana's example is a good JS example. Works well.

    For a CSS example, try: CSS Play

    Re: Pop up menu AP Div buttons behavior

    Guys thank you so much for the quick responses, like I said, I am very new at this and only worked thorugh the whole DW CS 3 for dummies to learn...not kidding...the whole book I am busy workign through DW CS3 Bible - and I was wondering if the same "code" (which I know nothing about) would apply if I am using a flash button? I heard that Javascript is risky because not eveyone has it installed and alot of servers block it? ANyway, basically I have the flash button which looks really good on my page and I need to link a pop up menu to it filled with a row of vertical buttons. So I was just wondering if I coudl study the code and then apply it to the <object> aka flash button?

    I appreciate the help.

    Thanx

    Re: Pop up menu AP Div buttons behavior

    The problem with Javascript is that not all browsers implement it the same way. Also, there are many users (like me) that disable JS by default. Flash will work fine as well. Here are the differences between Flash, JS, and CSS:

    Flash Advantages:
    1. The button consists of one file.
    2. The implementation is identical between browsers.
    3. The scripting can get pretty fancy.

    Flash Disadvantages:
    1. The file must be downloaded completely before it is displayed. This is not a big deal for a small button, but the larger the file, the longer it takes for the page to be ready to run (think dialup)
    2. Flash files can be blocked
    3. Updates require the Flash file to be recompiled and reuploaded to the site
    4. The Flash plugin has to be installed in order to view the item.
    5. Requires some programming knowledge to implement properly.

    Javascript Advatages:
    1. The necessary files can be loaded as needed.
    2. The script is run locally on the PC rather than on the server, so page load time is fairly short.
    3. The scripting can get pretty fancy.

    Javascript Disadvantages:
    1. JS can be disabled in a browser
    2. Not all browsers render JS identically (though it has been fairly standardized)
    3. JS is a programming language and therefore requires some learning curve.

    CSS advantages:
    1. CSS does not get blocked
    2. Changes can be made relatively easily and the code can easily be changed to reflect design changes in a site.
    3. No programming knowledge necessary in order to implement.

    CSS Disadvantages:
    1. CSS is implemented differently between browsers.
    2. Users can implement their own style sheets overriding yours.

    Hope that helps. Basically, it boils down to personal preference and site requirements. I know my preference for my site, but I am also a paranoid programmer that grew up on a dialup connection. (Bet you can't guess what I would choose. )
