bought a domain name, now what?

Hello,

I just bought a domain name for a website I am attempting to design. My website is hosted by my isp, how do I get my domain name to attatch to my site? If it helps my site is http://shanepritchard.home.bresnan.net and the domain name is shanepritchard.com.

Thanks

Hi Shane, you will need to find out from your ISP if you can point a domain, if so they should give you nameservers. If not then you would have to use forwarding.

If it comes down to needing to do it through domain forwarding, you may be better off getting a real hosting package.

Thanks for the response. I think I comprehend what your saying.

What are the downsides to domain forewarding?

Re: bought a domain name, now what?

The main thing is that the address bar will always show the domain and not the path to whatever page they are on. This will have a major affect on the search engines as well.

Re: bought a domain name, now what?

I went ahead and got a real webhost. Now Im wondering how to make it so that the url shanepritchard.com opens up my home page. I have my files uploaded, but to get into the site I have to type in shanepritchard.com/home.htm.

Thanks

Rename home.htm to index.htm and it should work then.

Re: bought a domain name, now what?

You can go into your domain interface and follow the way to set up your nameservers, your host should have gave these to you. If you have any problems or are unsure post the nameservers here and I will take care of it.

btw, where did you get your hosting?

Question Re: bought a domain name, now what?

Hey Im wondering if there is a way to set up my site without having to purchase yet another hosting package.
I have one now for a domain. but have two other domains that I just cant figure out how to get going!
I want to be able to have the address direct,
mydomain.com without having it with the addition of my current site... mydomain.com/mydomain
and while reading this please refer to my user name...
